School Age Storytime Sucsseses, Failures, Songs, and Crafts

Stortimes Has Fleas

Inspired by bayviews.org I decided to pick an unusual theme for storytime this week... Fleas!

The first selection wasn't flea specific: I Know an Old Teacher by Anne Bowen.

In this cumulative tale, the "old" teacher starts out by swallowing a flea (it fell out of her hair and into her tea) and then proceeds to ingest most of the class pets. A great "gross out" story that got lots of laughs and "Ewwwwwws."

Next up was another cumulative-type tale, The Flea's Sneeze by Lynn Downey.

It's a cute, if sometimes clumsy tale (I understand that one animal was scared and cried, "Boo Hoo," but how did startling the bat make his eyes turn blue? If you can't rhyme it sensibly, maybe you should leave it out?) Primed for laughter by the previous book, the kids enjoyed this one. However, I'm not thrilled with the forced rhymes. If there were more books about fleas available to me, I might not have chosen this one.

Ed and Fred Flea by Pamela Duncan Edwards was our last tale.

Ed and Fred are brother fleas that live on a dog. One is good, but the other one is greedy and wants the whole dog to himself. Of course, this doesn't end well. This book was another winner, although I think the ending confused some of my littler ones. The pictures are great!

Although I found a flea song on one of our CDs, I have to admit, I didn't like the vocals, so I went with a song that made me think of how I feel when I get flea-bitten: I am Slowly Going Crazy! I used the version from the Allard's Pizza Pizzazz.

Our craft was fairly simple. I reused the same Origami Dog craft I've used before, but on letter paper cut down to 8.5 by 8.5. After folding and coloring our dogs, we added a little black pom-pom as its "flea"

One girl outright refused to put a flea on her dog, though!
